Stunning late 1970's/early '80's large vintage grey leather bag with zip, handmade in England by Clive Shilton. This bag is made from the finest dark grey calf leather. The scalloped edges are picked out in a slightly paler grey leather piping and stitching has been used to create a shell motif (one of Shilton's trademarks). The front and back of the bag are of rigid construction, the sides are very soft and it has been designed so that the bag is quite flat when empty and extends as filled. It has a thin shoulder strap, which can be tucked inside the bag if you wish to carry it as a large clutch. It has a grey moire lining and inside there is one large open pocket, which contains the original mirror (the glass has spotted with age).
Condition: generally this bag shows very little signs of use. There are some light scratches to the surface and creasing of the very soft leather at the sides, but there is no wear along the edges and the inside is like new, clean and unmarked. There are some small compressions on the front and a larger one on the back, from storage. Please refer to the photographs.
Measures: width 30.5cm; height 26.5cm; depth 7cm. Shoulder strap is 8mm wide and 77 cm in length.
Brand History: Clive Shilton was well known in the fashion world of 1970's London for his beautiful handmade shoes and bags. In 1981 he designed Princess Diana's wedding shoes and went on to make shoes for Madonna and other celebrities, but then chose to move away from London and pursue a new career in landscape gardening.
A pair of his evening mules with the iconic shell motif stitching appeared in the V&A Exhibition The Cutting Edge: 50 Years of British Fashion 1947-1997 and is held in its Textiles and Fashion Collection.
